Feeling guilty for no reason

In my article overcoming guilt, I explained the reasons that could make someone feel guilty and then i mentioned the ways for dealing with them, however, what I didn’t mention there is the guilt you may feel because of your past unfinished business!!

Whatever happens in your past is never forgotten by your subconscious mind, but instead, it records the events and then tries to find a way to wipe out the unwanted ones. If for some reason you did something in the past the made you feel guilty then this guilt may be carried over in such a way that it appears in different forms.

Carried over guilt

Suppose that you treated your mother badly in your past and then she died. In such a case the guilt is not forgotten but its turned into an unfinished business, this unfinished business will result in making you recall these feelings of guilt whenever you see someone who looks like your mother.

Didn’t you notice that sometimes you have sympathy towards people you meet for the first time? One of the reasons for this sympathy is the past unfinished business from your past. Be it a mother or a sister that you have treated badly it won’t matter, all what matters is that those feelings will attack you again whenever you see people who look like those figures.

This happens because your mind thinks that people who look alike are the same, and so to your mind, helping someone who looks like your dead mother is similar to helping your mother. The same goes with love, you can fall in love with someone just because he looks like your old lover or because he looks like someone who gave you lots of support in your past.

This can also happen in another form, if you knew a person who was having a hard time and that person was your friend, you may find yourself experiencing sympathy when seeing someone who looks like him.

How to get over guilt

If you want to get over this carried guilt then you have to understand yourself and your behavior and then forgive yourself. By forgiving yourself you are telling your subconscious mind that there is no need to dig after an unfinished business and that you didn’t mean to do what you did in the past (see always feeling guilty).
