Why do we suppress certain thoughts

Why do we suppress certain thoughts

In so many cases a person desperately tries to break a habit or change a behaviour only to discover in the end that the main motive behind that behaviour was stemming from his subconscious mind. In many cases our brains work in an auto pilot mode just because we are executing instructions that we aren't consciously aware of.

But the important question here is , why did those thoughts become unconscious?
Why wasn't that person fully conscious of those thoughts as they occurred in his mind?

The short answer is, sometimes we choose to suppress certain thoughts at some points of our lives and as a result our unconscious minds keep on executing that order for the rest of our lives.

If for example a person has been through a bad situation that he wasn't able to cope with then he might consciously try to suppress his thoughts. Once this process becomes successful that thought might hardly become conscious again. The conscious vs subconscious mind

Fear of facing life, not having enough skills or the inability to cope with a problem are among the reasons that lead to the suppression of certain thoughts.

What about the thoughts we never suppressed manually

You might be wondering why do some thoughts get suppressed even though you never tried to suppress them consciously. For example a person might find out that he is doing a certain bad habit because of a an unconscious thought that he didn't manually suppress.

Your mind in an incredible computer. Once you teach it something it can stick to it for the rest of your life. If your preferred attitude was escaping from problems instead of facing them then you would be sending a message to your subconscious mind telling it to suppress any bad and unwanted thought.

It's like programing your mind to escape whenever something unpleasant happens. In the Super powers course i said that once the mind is programmed to act in a certain way it will stick to that strategy and even master it as the time passes.

In such a case your mind becomes a master of evading troubles by avoiding unpleasant and unwanted thoughts. After sometime all of your behaviour and actions will be controlled by invisible forces that you won't be aware of and you will feel lost.

Not only you will be clueless about what's going on in your life but you will also have a serious self understanding problem.

Why this never leads to peace of mind

Some people might mistakenly believe that suppressed thoughts can never bother them again but in fact those thoughts can still ruin their lives. Those thoughts never disappear but they change their form one form to another.

Bad dreams, nightmares, unexplained bad moods, mood swings, bad habits and many more problems are just symptoms of thoughts that a person tried badly to suppress. The new form that a suppressed thought takes can actually be much more destructive than the initial form the person tried to escape from.

I have said it before but i will keep saying it over and over. Be brave and you will be free of most psychological problems.
