Fear of happiness

As strange as this sounds there is a type of fear that is called fear of happiness and what's really surprising about it is that it's more common than you think.

At any point of time you might actually be unconsciously preventing yourself from getting happy even though you might be searching for happiness consciously.

Don't worry i will explain everything now.

In my previous article Why do i feel bad when i try to do anything i said that before doing any action our brains does a general check on our thoughts, beliefs and life problems. If any problem was encountered during that check our moods will usually change to the worse.

Now this kind of check doesn't only happen when we are about to do something but it also happens when we are about to experience any emotion. Let's suppose that a new good event happened, in such a case your brain will make a quick check on everything before it actually makes you happy. This is one reason why depressed people don't feel happy. It's just the fact that their brains stop the emotion of happiness from happening after encountering a block.

Now what if during the check your brain found that you are afraid of happiness?
In such a case it will help you avoid your fears by preventing you from becoming happy.

What causes fear of happiness

But why would any person be afraid of happiness?
And why would your subconscious mind prevent you from becoming truly happy?

here are some possible explanations:

  • 1) Fear of the transition to sadness: So many people fear happiness , without realizing, because they are too afraid of the transition from happiness to sadness. In other words those people fear becoming happy because they know it would feel very bad to become sad again
  • 2) Fear of raising their expectations: So many people fear happiness because they are afraid to raise their expectations. The fear of optimism is more common than you think and it forces a person to become pessimistic not to be disappointed.   • 5) Bad past experiences with happiness: A person could develop fear of happiness if it happened that they became sad right after feeling happy many times before. In such a case bad past experience with happiness can prevent a person from feeling happy. See also My past is haunting me

Emotions are subconscious

What you need to understand in here is that emotions happen on the unconscious level. In other words, your fear of happiness might skip unnoticed from your conscious mind. This is why you might remain sad without knowing the reason for it.
