How your future expectations affect your mood

At any point of time your expectations about the future always affect your current mood. Why do you think many people feel bad on Sunday night, or at the end of their weekend, even though Monday didn’t arrive yet?

It’s because their future expectations, that they have work tomorrow in this case, directly affects their moods. The same would happen if you were expecting something good to happen.

If for example you knew that you will have a long vacation tomorrow and that you will travel to interesting places then probably your mood will change to the better even though the vacation didn’t come yet.

Those changes in mood happen instantly the moment your expectations about the future change. If for example your manager told you that you have to delay your travel plans because of unexpected workload then probably you are going to feel worse instantly.

The important conclusion you should have reached now is that by just changing your expectations about the future you can actually improve your mood right away. In my previous article How to change your mood by changing your perception i said that once you manage to change the way you see things you can actually see the world in a totally different light.

How to see the future differently

At any point of time your future expectations will depend upon your beliefs. If you believe that tomorrow is going to be a bad day then probably you are going to feel bad right now in anticipation to those bad events.

The one thing that can reverse this mood is the process of belief change. In many of my previous articles i said that beliefs can be changed once proper communication is established between your conscious and your subconscious mind.

In the Ultimate guide to developing Super powers i said that in order for you to change a belief you need to talk to your subconscious mind and convince it that you are right.

In many cases talking alone might not be enough because some actions might be required as well. Let's suppose that you were worried because you have a lot to study before an upcoming exam.

In such a case studying a lot of material in one day would send your subconscious mind a clear message that you are capable of studying the rest of the material in the available time.

When i talked about convincing your subconscious mind to believe in your plans i said that actions are like words to the subconscious mind. When you do the right actions you are actually talking to your subconscious mind and convincing it with your point of view.

Convincing the subconscious mind by writing a plan

One of the actions that can help you convince your subconscious mind to change its point of view about something is writing a plan. When you write a plan you are actually proposing new beliefs to your subconscious mind.

The only problem in here is that if your subconscious mind doesn't really trust you, because of a bad past history of broken promises for example, then your plan might not make sense to your subconscious mind. See Can the subconscious mind be controlled

In other words the reason plans motivate some people and not others is that the subconscious minds of the earlier group believe in those plans. This is why it's very important to work on building trust between you and your subconscious mind in order to facilitate future communication between them.
