Goal setting is an integral part of success. In my previous article Why is goal setting important i explained how a person can easily feel lost if he didn't have clear goals.
The mistake so many people do when they try to set goals is that they set ones that can't be truly measured then feel less motivated when they realize they aren't making any progress. See Why do i lack motivation
If your goal isn't 100% measurable then probably you will lose motivation after realizing that you aren't achieving anything. The other mistake people do when they set goals is that they sometimes set goals that are not measurable while believing that those goals are measurable.
The result in the second case is usually no better than the first. As the person fails to measure his progress he might quickly lose motivation and become indifferent.
When i talked about Indifference before i said that one of the main reasons it happens is loss of hope. If you believed you aren't making any progress then indifference will certainly happen.
So how to set measurable goals?
Setting a goal such as 'I will become popular among friends' is a totally big mistake.
How will you know that you became popular?
And how will you be able to tell that you are 30% or 40% done with your goal?
Yes i understand that becoming popular might be one of your goals but in order for this goal to be effective you need to divide into many smaller specific goals.
In such a case this goal could be divided into the following:
What happened here is that the vague and unclear goal was converted into an action plan that has 100% measurable goals. Now at any point you could examine your plan and find out your exact progress.
If you found any delay in the achievement of the goals you should then modify your strategy or try new methods. Now if the goal wasn't measurable how are you going to know if something was wrong?
Setting goals such as 'I want to become rich' or 'I want to increase my income' will certainly prevent you from getting motivated because those goals aren't clear .A clear goal would be something like 'earning 1000 USD more/month' for example.
When you set a measurable goal your subconscious mind will do its best to help you reach it. After all the subconscious mind is 100% goal oriented and once it has a clear target it will do anything to help you reach it.
This is why you must set compelling and challenging goals for if you didn't then your subconscious mind won't be motivated to help you.
The subconscious mind doesn't like unclear or vague goals. Make sure you divide each single vague goal that you have into many sub goals that are crystal clear and 100% measurable.
