If for example you woke up late one day you might start to imagine your boss shouting at you because of arriving late and then you might start thinking how will that affect your ratings at the end of the quarter. Some people can even go further and think that this might lead to firing them.

As you just saw not being able to control a small thought can result in catastrophic negative thoughts.

The first thing you need to do to control your negative thoughts is to have a backup plan that you are going to apply in case things go wrong. For example if you applied for a job you must have a backup plan that you are going to follow in case you didn't the job.

By doing so you are going to be in control of your thoughts as you wont give your mind a chance to wander freely.

The second thing you must learn to do in order to control your negative thoughts is to stop the imaginary negative scenario as soon as it comes to your mind. Yes if you woke up late one day your boss might shout at you but its not logical to assume that this will affect your future!!

The third thing you need to do to be in control of your negative thoughts is to ask what if questions. For example :What if i arrived on time even if i woke up late??? why am i assuming that i will be late?

what if i arrived late but my boss didn't notice?
What if he noticed but was in a good mood and so ignored this fact?

As you can see many people fail to control their negative thoughts not because of the bad events that happen to them but because of the imaginary scenarios they create as a result of these events.
