lying detection and the eyes

Lying detection and eye movement

Every time I read an article about lying detection using eye movements I become disappointed, simply because people put rules like “looking to the left means that he is lying” and then follow them blindly thinking that they are always correct. While some of these rules have scientific basis, many of them are just special cases that can hardly be useful in lying detection in the practical world.

Visualizing and remembering

Some people look at the upper left when they try to visualize something while some other people look at the upper right. If I have asked you about the color of your dream car then most likely you are going to look in the direction you use for visualization.

Some people look at the upper left when they try to remember something while some other people look at the upper right. If I asked you about the color of your first car then most likely you are going to look in the direction you use for remembering.

so everyone of us has got a certain direction that the looks to when he remembers something and a certain direction that he looks to when he visualizes something.

It’s as if the eye movements represent the function that is currently happening in the brain. By asking the person a question that you know its answer, you are allowing yourself to know the direction he uses for remembering and the direction he uses for visualizing. After you determine his directions just ask him the other question you want and see if he is lying to you or not.

If he looked at the direction of visualizing while acting as if he is remembering something then most probably he is lying. Note that each person is a special case and that there is no universal direction for remembering or visualizing and that’s why you need to ask the first question in order to determine these directions for that specific person.

auditory verse visual

When people recall or visualize sounds they tend to look the middle right or the middle left while when they recall or visualize images they tend to look at the upper right or the upper left.

So if someone looked to the middle right when asked about the sound of his manager then it means that he is recalling the sound in his brain. If you asked that same person a question like “how was Sam’s voice like when he was on phone with you yesterday” then his eyes went to the middle left then this means that he is visualizing a sound that he has never heard before and so he is lying.
