Are You Unemployed?
Just graduated and can't find a job yet? Starting to get worried about your future? Fear not, because after reading and following this guide, your chances of finding a job will be much higher than they used to.
Do You Know Why You Can't Find a Job?
Before you know how to find a job you must first know what is stopping you from finding one in the first place. The following are some of the possible reasons:
- There are limited or no job opportunities: The difference between a high rate of unemployment and lack of job opportunities is that, in the first case there will be some job opportunities available but they are limited in number. This means that only the best will get these jobs. In the second case, even if you were the best you still won't be able to get a job.
.
- High Unemployment:: Some countries have high unemployment rates, maybe up to ten percent and somtimes even more.
- Lack of necessary skills: Simply put, you don’t have the required skills to get you the kind of job you want. For example, you're not going to be able to find a job as a secretary without knowing a little bit about computers.
- You don’t know how to present yourself: If you have poor interview, communication or resume writing skills then you might have trouble finding a suitable job. In this case, your problem is that although you are qualified, you don’t know how to present yourself to others.
What to Do in Order to Get a Job
Lets take the above cases one by one and decide how we are going to deal with each case:
- There are limited or no job opportunities: First of all, you should know that this case is very rare and is almost always confused with the case of having high unemployment. I once had an Egyptian friend who couldn't find a job upon graduation. This person had no skills or knowledge outside those he learned in the university, and although it's not obligatory to study anything else, like language courses etc.., at the time of writing this article the unemployment rate in egypt was 9.8 percent.
My friend’s problem was that he was totally convinced that there were no job opportunities in the country!!!
He thought that the problem lied with the country while in reality, the problem was with him!! He had no advantages that would recommend him to employers and the high unemployment rate of 9.8 percent meant that only talented people would be hired while normal ones (like him) would be left behind.
The belief that “there are no job opportunities in this country” was a false belief and an incorrect assessment on my friend's part and it cost him his chance to find a decent job. If you find yourself in a similar position, make sure to test your belief and to note whether the problem is with the country itself or with you.
Finally, if you are sure that the problem does not lie with you and that you are truly skilled yet can't find a job, then you could take the option of travelling somewhere else. This approach requires you to be flexible and to not breakdown in front of the first obstacle you find in your way.
- High unemployment rate: As previously mentioned, a high unemployment rate doesn’t mean that you won't find a job, it just means you need to be a little better than your competitors (other job seekers) in order to get the job. Differentiating yourself is very easy: you need to be unique and different and in the job market, this translates into having more skills and qualities than your peers. Learn another language, learn a programming language, take any additional courses or get a master degree. Whatever you do that sets you apart from the pack will make your resume look better than the hundreds who applied for the same job and that will make your chances of getting the job much higher.
- Lack of necessary skills: If that’s your case then what are you waiting for?
Why don’t you go and start working on those missing skills right now? Even though you probably can’t learn everything before you start working, you should at least have more than a basic idea in order to pass the job interview. For example, if you want to work as an accountant, you have to know how to use spreadsheets like Excel. What do you expect the interviewer will say if you tell him that you don’t have any experience with the software and have never used it before? If that's what’s making you unable to find a job then it's your own fault. Start now before its too late!!
- You don’t know how to present yourself: This is the easiest problem to solve since you are already qualified and ready for the job and only need to learn to present yourself.
