How to Become a Self Made Billionaire (A true story)

By M.Farouk Radwan, MSc.

Can someone really become a billionaire?

Yesterday i went into a debate with some of my friends about whether a person can become a self made billionaire or not. Their arguments were similar to the arguments every one who doesn't know how success works uses. They said things like "Its all about luck", "where you live determines who you will become" or "you can't compete with big companies when you are already small"

What do you think?
Do you think one man can challenge the odds and become a self made billionaire?
Before i tell you whether this is possible or not lets find out what Larry Ellison did.

I Deserve more!

Larry Ellison was a very ambitious young guy who believed that he deserved more recognition. The fact that he was adopted deeply affected his desire to show the world that he is really worthy. In other words, Larry's story didn't begin by a lucky opportunity that he came across but it began when he decided that he will prove to the world that he is worthy.

In the Solid Self confidence program i said that People who claim that luck is the number one reason for success usually look at end results without bothering to look at the full story, For if they looked at the full story they would have discovered that the luck concept is something that their minds invented in order to protect their self esteem and make them feel good about themselves even if they have achieved nothing in life.

Larry started working at a software company but he wasn't satisfied with his job. He kept talking about himself all the time and telling people how smart he was but this was getting him nowhere. Larry knew he was born to do something big and he was eagerly searching for it.

After working as a programmer for 8 years Larry discovered that he could invent a software that handles information processing and database searches better than IBM, one of the largest companies at that time.

And this was the time when one man decided to stand against a big empire.

How believing in yourself can change your luck

At the age of 34 Larry started his software company and created the first version of the software he believed to be superior IBM's products. He called that software Oracle.

Because he had solid belief in himself and the product he managed to sell his first copy to the CIA who eagerly needed a way to search through large databases and retrieve information efficiently.

Sales started to pick up, Larry started becoming rich and shorty after his company went public his shares became worth around 100 million dollars.

But, because Larry wasn't that lucky, version six of oracle was full of bugs and so people stopped buying it. The company was about to collapse , hundreds of employees were laid off and everyone was saying that the party was over for oracle.

Larry's eager desire for success prevented him from collapsing and he started taking serious actions to restore the company's former position. In few years oracle's revenues exceeded 2 billions dollars then years later Larry become One of the richest men in the world.

According to a survey that was released in 2012 Larry's net worth was 43 billion dollars and he was listed as the 5th richest man in the world.

Precious Lessons to learn from Larry's story

  • 1)Is it really luck? If you still believe in luck then you should have already discovered that Larry was unlucky. Larry was an adopted child who knew nothing about his past, he dropped out of college twice and he was not even a well recognized employee at the company he worked for. He was pretty lucky huh? Its all about determination and not luck. Larry wasn't living a good life yet he promised himself to prove to the world that he can become somebody (see also Inspirational stories of successful people)
  • 2) If you don't believe in yourself you will die: Imagine Larry thought about it the way my friends were thinking about it yesterday during our debate. "IBM is too big", "I am just one man" and "all i have is 1500 dollars, can anyone do anything with that?" would have been the phrases said by him if he had this mentality. Success in life is all about reliving that you can, once you do your luck will change and miracles will start to happen.
  • 3) You can start really small and become really big: All Larry had to begin with was 1500 dollars. But because he believed in himself he didn't blame his financial situation, the tough economy or his lack of resources but instead he focused on what he had instead of focusing on what he doesn't have
  • 4) You should search for the opportunity not wait for it: If Larry had the mentality of a typical person he would have waited years and years for the opportunity that will never arrive but because he understood that searching for the opportunity is a key factor in finding it he managed to find one.
