Depression and Lack of Motivation

By M.Farouk Radwan, MSc.

Depression and lack of motivation

One of the well known symptoms of depression is lack of Motivation where you will find yourself unable to do some of the tasks that you used to do. When someone becomes depressed he will usually experience a loss in energy which in turn makes him less motivated to do anything.

Lack of energy is not always a sign of depression but if it was accompanied with some of the other depression symptoms then you can make sure that it was caused by depression.

In a previous article with the title lack of enthusiasm and depression i said that once a person believes that his efforts are not going to change anything he will usually lose motivation.

Your mind is smart enough to only allocate the needed resources in the right place. If your mind believed that your efforts won't result in changing anything then it will certainly never allocate those resources.

In other words, this lack of motivation you are feeling is the direct result of your subconscious mind taking the decision not to motivate you because it believes that your efforts will result in nothing. See also The Psychology of indifference

What Can I Do to Get Motivated?

Although depression can drain your energy and reduce your motivation still there are things that you can do to get the motivation needed to finish important your tasks:

  • Give your mind a working soloution: Once your mind believes that there is a certain level of hope it will motivate you to work towards that soloution. Do your best to find possible alternatives that can help you solve the problem you are facing and once your mind believes in one of those alternatives it will motivate you to work towards it
  • Move with no motivation: Sometimes the subconscious mind might fail to believe in a plan even if it had a chance to work. In such a case you need to consciously follow this plan even if you are not motivated. Yes this will be a hard task but in the end if the plan worked the depression will go away. You will need to develop self discipline in order to be able to do this
  • Use Antidepressants: I am against the use of antidepressants if your intention is curing depression using them but if your goal was giving yourself some energy so that you can work on the real plan then using antidepressants might be a good idea. Antidepressants can help you restore your energy; make sure you consult a physician for proper depression medication. See The best way to treat depression.
  • Forcing yourself to work : If you have a great deal of personal power to force your way even when you are depressed then do it. Depression won't kill you. you won't be working with your usual energy levels but at least you'll get things done. The most important tip here is to force yourself to do the things that can help you end depression.
  • Deal with your depression: Every small step you take towards dealing with your depression will get you back some of your lost energy and in turn your motivation. Take serious actions when dealing with your depression instead of remaining indifferent. It's true that depression is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain but the chemical imbalance itself stems from a problem with your coping strategies.

In my book, The Ultimate Guide to Getting Over Depression I explained how depression can be nothing more than a message from your subconscious mind telling you that hope is lost. Restore hope, take action or find a way to respond to your subconscious mind and your depression will disappear.

Depression, hope and motivation

A person becomes motivated to do something when 1)he knows exactly what to do and 2) when he believes that doing this task will help him reach his goals.

Now what depression does is that it either makes the person helpless and unable to determine the next step he should take or it either lets him lose hope in the solutions he is currently working on.

That's why the key to ending depression and restoring your motivation levels is to find a way to bring back hope. Once you do that your depression will disappear and you will become motivated once again.

In short it's totally OK to lose motivation when you are depressed but as long as you can get things done then sooner or later you will be able to end this depression.
