Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicator (MBTI)

introduction to the Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicator (Mbti)

The Myers Briggs personality type indicator (MBTI) is a model for assessing people's personality developed by Myers Briggs. The MBTI model defines 16 different personality types that are driven from the combination of four different personality traits, each combination of traits gives a unique personality type.

Just like any other personality type theory the MBTI on its own cannot help you know everything about someone's personality. While knowing your MBTI personality type won't help you know everything about your personality still the MBTI types can be used to help you know a lot of information about yourself.

The four Letters of Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicator (Mbti)

The Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicator(MBTI) is based on four different personality traits, these traits are:

  • extroversion and introversion (E or I): The first of the four traits is extroversion and its opposite introversion. An extrovert is a person who becomes energized when being with people while an introvert is the person who needs some time alone every now or then to recharge his energy. Introverts live in their internal world and so they may be less talkative or a bit reserved ,on the contrary, extroverts are more connected to the external world and so they tend to connect with people more than introverts
  • sensing and intuition (S or N):when collecting information about the external world some people use their senses to collect data while others use their own intuition to figure out the information they want.
  • Thinking and feeling(T or F): when making decisions, the thinker uses his mind to analyze the situation and to take decisions without giving much weight to emotions, on the other hand, people who depend on feelings for decision making usually give emotional decisions while giving less weight to logic
  • judging and perceiving(J or P): A judging personality plans and organizes his life. He likes to make decisions and to have control over his world, on the other hand, the perceiving person does not put that much weight to planning, he prefers to be flexible and to keep things going as they are

putting the MBTI traits together (the 16 types)

After you find out which four letters describe you the most you just have to put them together to know your personality type according to the MBTI model.

For example if your traits are thinker (T), judging (J), sending (S) and you are an introvert (I) then your personality type is ISTJ . note that I have arranged them in order of the four preferences written above.

If you are a little confused about knowing one exact preference (like for example whether you are an extrovert or an introvert) you can take one of the many online tests to correctly asses your preference type.

After you have your four letters known you should then read about your specific personal characteristics according to the Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicator (Mbti) model.
