How to love your job

Now comes the important question, How can you love your job?

  • 1) Find something you are passionate about: People sometimes hate their jobs because of doing things that they really don't like to do. When you do something that you are passionate about the possibility that you love your job will increase
  • 2) Learn how to handle stress: If you are unable to handle the stress or the emotions resulting from your job then you might hate it. When you improve your coping skills your chance of loving your job will become higher
  • 3) Find a job that suits your personality: If your job goes against your values, psychological needs or personality then you might hate it. Learn how to find the right kind of job that matches your personality and values. If for example you are an extrovert then an isolated desk job might not be a good idea and so on
  • 4) Quit the wrong job: No matter how you try to love the wrong kind of job your chance of getting satisfied with it will become much lower. If there is no way to fix your working conditions but to quit then take the step and find another job that makes you happier
  • 5) Find a meaningful job: If you are doing a job that you consider meaningless then you will never love it. The only way to love your job is to believe that you are doing something useful
  • 6) Avoid peer pressure: When it comes to looking for a job or quitting it peer pressure can play a significant role. Most of your friends and family will either try to push you towards a certain job or they will either try to prevent you from quitting. In all cases following people without listening to your own inner voice can be a major cause of job dissatisfaction

The psychology behind hating your job

Hatred is the mechanism your mind uses to keep you away from the things that may represent a threat to your well being.

When you hate a task you actually hate the emotions that you experience while doing that task and not the task itself. When your mind finds that you always become overwhelmed with unpleasant emotions while doing something then it will automatically make you hate this thing in order to protect you from future unpleasant emotions.

If you don’t have good stress management skills and if your job contains lots of stress then most probably you will be experiencing lots of frustration while working. This stress and frustration is what will make you eventually hate your job because your mind will find that this task badly affects your well being.

If your manager always shouts at you it’s not their shouting that made you want to quit but rather it’s your response to this shouting. That’s why you may find two people doing the same job yet one of them is happy while the other hates it.

This goes for everything else and not just your job. If you hate to travel by car it's because of the unpleasant emotions you experience while driving for long distances. If you hate going to the gym it's because of the unpleasant emotions you experience while exercising and so on.

Do you hate your job? This is what you should do

So what should you do if you hate your job?
If quitting the job is not an option for you and if you have to keep doing this task that you don’t like then all what you have to do is to learn how to deal with these bad emotions you experience while doing the task and this will be enough to solve the problem.

In the example mentioned above learning how to deal with stress will surely result in making you find your job more pleasant and eventually you will like it.

In summary, it’s the emotions we experience while doing our jobs that results in making us hate our job and not the jobs themselves. By learning how to deal with these emotions you could learn how to love a task that you already hate.
