Can food change my mood?

Can food change your mood? Yes it can, simply because emotions are just chemical reactions and so whatever can affect these reactions can affect your mood.

Food can change your brain chemistry and so affect your emotions in turn. After knowing what food regulates your mood you can help yourself live a happier life. Here is how you can do it:

Eating to improve your mood

The following are a list of foods that can improve your mood:

  • Strawberries: Strawberries can keep sugar levels in the blood stable and so reduce irritability.
  • chocolate: chocolates lift the mood and can make you feel happy , if you felt down eat a chocolate but note that its effect is going to be a short term one
  • Caffeine: although too much of it is not healthy, still it can keep you alert, improve your concentration and so elevate your mood
  • carbohydrates: carbohydrates help in increasing serotonin levels which is the hormone responsible for mood regulation and for happiness
  • Salmon: salmon can supply your body with vitamin D which helps In increasing serotonin levels and so in feeling happy
  • milk: milk can reduce your response to stress
  • salty foods: salty foods can dehydrate your body and so cause fatigue
  • water: dehydration can make you irritated and unable to sleep well, make sure you drink enough water
  • alcohol: contrary to some beliefs, alcohol increases stress and limits the ability of the liver to remove toxins from the body.
  • fruits and vegetables: both fruits and vegetables contains fibers that helps in better digestion and in balancing the mood. Your diet must contain fruits and vegetables in order for it to be a healthy diet
  • The balance: after all eating a certain type of food excessively will only yield a reverse effect even if it was a healthy food. balance should be your goal, a balanced diet will lead to balanced brain chemicals and a balanced mood.

Mood lifting and weight gain

Some people gain weight only because they eat to change their moods!

These people usually put on weight for reasons that are not related to food itself but rather to their own emotional state.

If you eat just to lift your mood then certainly you will gain weight and end up feeling worse later on. Find the root causes of your problems, deal with them and you will feel really good.

The best way to feel good about yourself is to solve your big life problems that are the real cause behind your bad moods and to use quick fixes along the way to feel better until you manage to solve these problems.

Quick fixes do work but they are not a permanent solution. By combining quick fixes with a long term plan you will be able to improve your mood a great deal.
