Should i see a psychiatrist

By M.Farouk Radwan, MSc.

I need a Psychiatrist

We have learned to give all the attention we have to our physical illnesses but we learned to ignore our emotional problems even though they can be much more dangerous than most physical illnesses.

Lots of people who experience emotional pain commit suicide or try to kill themselves while this rarely happens with people who have physical illnesses and if this shows anything it would be that the severity of emotional problems compared to physical illnesses is much higher.

More than 75% of physical illness result from psychological problems

When your mind finds that something is going wrong it sends you a message in the form of bad emotions in order to motivate you to take an action, if you didn’t respond to the message in a timely manner the message becomes louder and the bad emotions becomes more intense.

If still you didn’t respond to the message your mind might start to send you physical illnesses like stomach aches, colds or back pain in order to take an action to solve the problem.

Signs you should see a Psychiatrist

  • 1) Long lasting emotional pain: It's totally OK to experience some kind of emotional pain every now and then but what's not normal is that this pain lasts for a long period of time. If a certain issue has been causing you emotional pain since months or even years then you might need to see a Psychiatrist. See Living with emotional pain
  • 2) Disabling emotional pain: If the emotional pain you are experiencing is mild and you are able to do most of your life tasks then probably you don't need to see a Psychiatrist but if the disorder has became disabling in such a case that it is preventing you from doing your normal life activities then you must see a Psychiatrist
  • 3) You are badly impacting the life of others: If the problem you are suffering from is affecting the lives of others , such as your children for example, then you should see a Psychiatrist
  • 4) When many people agree on that: In many cases we fail to see our own psychological disorders and as a result we might need to take the opinion of others. If many people agreed that you should see a Psychiatrist then this could be the right decision

Ignoring your problems might lead to depression

Depression is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain but the chemical imbalance itself stems from the person's inability to deal with a certain life problem. In my previous articles i explained how depression can be nothing more than a message sent to your by your subconscious mind telling you that hope is lost. Restore hope, take actions or find a way to respond to your subconscious mind and your depression will disappear.

If you kept ignoring an emotional problem that you are currently facing then you will end up depressed and if this emotional problem was depression then your pain will become worse. Start taking actions and help yourself right now.
