Why did Steve Jobs like to walk barefoot?

By M.Farouk Radwan, MSc.

The legendary Steve Jobs

To be honest i'd be lying if i said that i know for sure the reason behind Steve jobs' barefoot habit but what i will do in this article is provide you with a psychological theory that will make a lot of sense to you and that i personally believe is the reason behind this weird habit.

Steve Jobs wasn't an ordinary guy but he was a rebel who challenged the norms, rejected the status quo and rebelled against the standards put by others.

This was very clear in one of his famous quotes "When you grow up you, tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world, try not to bash into the walls too much, try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money. That’s a very limited life" (see also Steve jobs explains how to change the world)

That's clearly a mentality of someone who doesn't want to fit into systems created by others. He dropped out of college because he didn't believe college education was useful for him but he still attended the subjects that appealed to him.

Why did Steve Jobs like to walk barefoot?

Some people might assume that Steve jobs used to walk barefoot because of health concerns or other beliefs and they might be right but what makes more sense to me is that its his own way of declaring that he is a rebel.

What would you think of a person who comes to convince you to buy his product while walking barefoot?

If you judged him superficially you will think that he is crazy but if you looked deeper you will easily conclude that he is a person who hates to be bound by rules, who doesn't give a dime about peer pressure and who has a lot of self confidence.

Steve Jobs' message through his barefoot habit is that he is different and that he is not stuck in the system like others. I have read somewhere that Steve jobs went to do an important deal without his shoes and that this annoyed the person he was meeting so much.

The connection between behavior and personality

In many of my articles i said that its hard to determine what a certain behavior signifies when examined alone because many people can do the same behavior for many different reasons.

But when many of a person's behavior point to the same personality traits then its time to assume that this person is acting this way because of those traits.

Steve jobs rebelled by dropping out of college, By starting his own company, dreaming big, challenging large players like IBM and pushing people beyond their limits.

Now when looking at an ordinary Joe who walks barefoot its safe to assume that he did it because of health concerns but when it comes to a personality like Steve Jobs its clear that his Barefoot habit was one of the expressions of his Rebellious nature.

Do looks really matter? Can an unattractive person attract a very attractive one? Yes its quite possible and this is exactly what Jane's Code is all about. A revolutionary book that explains how love can be manipulated no matter who you are or how you look like.
