Should i do what i love or what makes money

By M.Farouk Radwan, MSc.

Do i have to do what i love in order to succeed?

Before i can tell you the answer to that question i first need to give you an idea about the way success happens. After analyzing hundreds of success stories of successful people it became obvious that all of them shared certain similarities which are:

1) Success usually doesn't happen from the first attempt
2) success doesn't usually happen fast or instantly
3) serious difficulties are usually faced before a person succeeds. (see also Is success easy)

Now imagine that you were doing something that you really disliked then failed. Do you think you will be motivated to try again? will you be able to read to learn more about your mistakes?

When you do something that you don't like it becomes much harder to try again or read books in order to learn about the mistakes you did. And because success usually doesn't happen before you do these steps you are more likley to succeed doing what you like. (see also 5 things you must do in order to succeed in life)

Should i do what i love or what makes money

But what if the thing you have passion for weren't bringing you money while something else that you really hate was bringing you money?

In such a case the best thing you need to do is to keep your job even if you disliked it while working on finding a way to make money from the thing you are passionate about.

Back in 2006 i was working at a job that i didn't like and my passion was for psychology which didn't bring me any money back then. All i did was keeping my day job for years while developing my skills to be able to make money from the thing i like.

Within 2 years i was making good money from this psychology website and after 2 more years i left the job. In other words, i spent 4 years doing what i don't like because i had a long term plan to make a living from what i like. (see also My book How i did it)

Had i quit the job earlier i might have felt depressed because of the lack of income and my mind might have not been clear enough to bring me the idea of this website.

Do people who like what they do enjoy their work?

The short answer is no. Even beta testers of games who do nothing but play games actually feel that they are working and not playing.

Because 2knowmyself is not a site that promotes lies or false beliefs i must tell you that liking what you do won't let you enjoy your work.

When you become obligated to do something it becomes less joyful and even stressful. Try to play a game that you like in a time where you don't really feel like it and you will get what i mean.

So if that's the case then why should you do what you like?
Its because doing what you don't like can make you feel really bad to the extent that you might not become creative or motivated to start again after failure.

Work will always be stressful even if you are doing what you love however doing what you don't love might be a great obstacle towards success.

I have managed to become a self made millionaire at the age of 28. This didn't happen by chance because i already wrote that goal down five years before i accomplished it. Becoming rich is not about luck, starting big or being intelligent but its all about having certain beliefs about money and life.

In The Ultimate guide to becoming rich i will teach you everything that you need to know in order to become rich.
