You keep asking yourself why certain events that you can’t stop come your way. You sure feel you have no free will if you can’t help having an accident or being sick with a disease that would eventually kill you.
You would start thinking it is all predestined and you are just like the actor in a movie, acting out what was written in the script.
You may say that our lives are all about fate that we can’t control but some people say it’s about the choices that we make too. You may not be able to change the fact that you broke your leg. But when it is broken, you can choose either to lie around all day doing nothing or to hop on one leg and go on with your life.
It is fate that a fire breaks out in your house but you can decide whether you want to try to put it out or to run away.
You may not be given the choice of whether to live or die, but most definitely you get to choose how to live. Talia Joy made a such a choice and she made it wisely.
In February 2007, when Talia Joy was seven years old, she was first diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma cancer. It is a tumor that develops from nerve tissue in children.
After she underwent chemotherapy, radiation and surgery she became cancer free for a year but in 2008 she relapsed and doctors found that the disease had spread to a small lymph node near her heart.
Although she got various treatments during the following four years, the cancer kept returning to various parts of her body. From 2012 up till now Talia has been battling two forms of cancer, neuroblastoma and leukemia. Doctors say she needs a bone marrow transplant but her body cannot take it as she has had too many surgeries in her short life.
Talia is now reaching the end of her journey and has even signed the DNR papers which are to make the medical team respect her wishes to die a natural death once her heart stops.
Although the doctors tell her to expect death to knock her door anytime, Talia, now thirteen years old, has had enough time to become a popular make-up artist. Her make-up tutorials on Youtube have been viewed more than 14 and a half million times.
In one of her tutorials Talia said, “Makeup is my wig. And when people look at me, I like to think they are looking at my makeup not my bald head.”
She also has more then 39 million views for her Youtube channel and she has inspired hundreds of thousands of people. She has been described as an internet sensation and a Youtube star.
Talia’s power to fascinate us does not stop here. The Los-Angeles fashion designer Urbana Chappa decided to help fulfill Talia’s dream of becoming the designer of a clothing collection for teenagers. Chappa flew to Florida to meet Talia at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and help her bring her designer ideas to life.
When asked how she manages to stay so positive she said that when people ask her that question she usually says, “What do you want me to do? Be depressed?” And then she humorously added, “But a little fish told me ‘just keep swimming, just keep swimming’”.
In one of her videos Talia says, “It’s not like I’m happy or something, it’s that I face reality and I’m truthful but I believe that I can fight it.”
Reality says Talia has cancer and that she might die soon. That is pure fate and it might be unchangeable. But Talia gets to make choices too.
Her first option was to divide her time between treatment, praying and waiting for death, to believe herself helpless and her efforts pointless. Her second option was to use her passion for make-up to become a make-up artist and a greatly admired star.
It can’t be doubted that fate is many times unwelcome and that both options would end in her death. But it is how she is leading her life until death comes that matters.
The part of her life where she endures chemotherapy, radiations, blood transfusions and stem cell transplants is not in her power to control.
But the other part of her life where she enthusiastically teaches girls how to wear make-up springs from her free will. We are not the masters of our fate. But we choose how to react to that fate from among multiple possible options. Do we react with depression? Or with courage? Which would make us winners? Fate and free will don’t contradict each other: they exist side by side.
If you look for causes why tragedy happens you will be lost. You will also get nowhere if you look for someone or something to blame because fate is sometimes inexplicable. The best solution is to hit back at it. Fate plays a big role in Talia’s story but she is the main heroine.
