How to overcome life challenging events

I was watching the movie peaceful warrior and i came across a very inspiring scene that i wanted to share with you. The movie is about an athlete (Dan) who was really good at gymnastics before he had a disabling accident that prevented him from performing.

Throughout the movie Socrates, a mysterious wise man, helps Dan pull himself apart and get back to gymnastics. That's a part of the very inspiring conversation that happened between them:

Socrates (Wiseman): I think you should continue your training as a gymnast. A warrior does not give up what he loves, Dan. He finds the love in what he does.
Dan Millman (Athlete): Look at me! I have a metal rod in my leg.
Socrates: A warrior is not about perfection, or victory, or invulnerability. He's about absolute vulnerability. That's the only true courage.
Dan Millman: What kind of training you think I could do? I just had an accident!
Socrates: The accident is your training. Life is choice. You can choose to be a victim or anything else you'd like to be.
Dan Millman: Just ignore what happened to me?
Socrates: A warrior acts, only a fool reacts.
Dan Millman: What if I can't do it?
Socrates: That's the future. Throw it out.
Dan Millman: Well, how would we start?
Socrates: There is no starting or stopping, only doing.

How to overcome life challenging events

This very short conversation pointed out many of the mistakes so many people do when they attempt to face life challenges. Lets examine those mistakes together:

  • 1) Denying vulnerability: In my previous article about worrying i explained how denying the fact that you are vulnerable can lead to worrying and failure. Once you admit that you are vulnerable you will accept life challenges in a better way and you will have much less hard time dealing with them
  • 2) Not considering your limitations your battle: When Socarets said "The accident is your training" he actually referred to each one of us. Your poverty, your tough life or your lack of resources is your training. If you expect to have everything you need in order to succeed then you have an unrealistic view of success. Successful people are the ones who face the challenge of being inadequate until they become capable.
  • 3) Excuses are a choice: You always have the option of giving excuses and blaming someone or something for your misfortune or taking steps to save yourself. When i started my first business i didn't have any capital to begin with, i could have given excuses but i chose to be productive and this is why it turned into a one million dollar business.
  • 4) Making negative assumptions When Dan said "What if i can't do it?" Socrates quickly pointed his attention to the fact that this is just a future assumption that might be totally incorrect. The same goes for you, how many future assumptions are stopping you now from tying? (see also Changing negative beliefs)
  • 5) Waiting for a savior: So many people wait until things become better or until someone saves them and that's why most of them remain stuck. In order to get yourself out of a problem you need to start taking actions
