How to bridge the gap between the conscious and the unconscious mind

How the subconscious mind thinks

In many of my previous articles i said that the subconscious mind doesn't use logic and that it thinks in a primitive way. For example if you saw a small spider and got scared then most probably this happened because the subconscious mind mistakenly believed that the spider can harm you.

But when you think about this logically you won't find any reason to fear the spider. After all it's small, not poisonous (usually) and can't do any harm.

One of the readers once told me how come the subconscious mind doesn't use logic while in sometimes great ideas might come out of the subconscious mind? I found that topic worth an article and this is why i decided to explain it more in here.

Why the subconscious doesn't use logic

The phrase "The subconscious mind doesn't use logic" doesn't mean that the subconscious mind doesn't have any logic. It's just that the subconscious mind has its own private logic that might be very different than the conscious mind's logic.

For example if you were walking by some strangers then suddenly felt scared for no reason then most probably your subconscious mind believed that you are in danger based on its own private logic. Maybe for example one of those strangers looked like someone who bullied you in the past and thus your subconscious mind believed that this person might bully you as well.

While the conscious logic didn't find anything wrong with those people the unconscious logic did. So many of the problems you face everyday might just be the result of the conflict of logic between your conscious and your subconscious mind. Here are some examples:

  • Self esteem issues: In the Solid Self confidence program i said that while you might consciously find no reason to feel anxious around others your subconscious mind might believe that people might judge you negatively for some reason
  • Lack of motivation: In my previous article Why logic can't motivate you i explained that the energy needed to get motivated must be allocated by the subconscious mind and that if the subconscious mind didn't feel good about a goal then you might not get motivated
  • Psychological disorders: Many of the popular psychological disorders happen because the subconscious mind wants to reach a goal that is different than the the goal the conscious mind wants to reach. A person might develop paranoia for example to feel superior to others by believing that everyone is out there to harm him (see also What are the subconscious goals)

How to bridge the gap between the conscious and the unconscious mind

Now the important question is: How to help both the conscious and the subconscious mind communicate well so that you can avoid most of those problems?

In order to do that you need two things, knowledge and courage. The knowledge part will help you understand the different ways the subconscious mind thinks and the strategies it uses to reach its goals.

The courage part is needed because many of these problems arise as a result of the person's conscious desire to run away from important problems. People who try to keep themselves busy to forget about their big issues usually suffer more as the gap between their conscious and unconscious goals become wider.

Teach yourself everything you need about self understanding then develop the needed courage to face whatever is buried deep inside in your subconscious mind. Only then you will have real control over your behaviour.
