Why enjoying the journey motto is a total nonsense

By M.Farouk Radwan, MSc.

Most people lack courage

From the experience i have with dealing with people i can confidently tell you that brave ones are less than 5% of the population. And by using the word brave i am not referring to people who can bungee jump or take a selfie with a lion but i am talking about the people who are brave enough to admit reality without having to fake some beliefs in order to make life tolerable.

In many of my previous articles i talked about the various strategies some people use to twist their reality in order to make life more tolerable and of course the most popular way of twisting reality is developing wrong beliefs then believing in them.

There are many types of false beliefs that people use to deceive themselves but the most subtle ones are the ones hidden in the form of positive beliefs. In such a case the person takes self deception to a new level because after all he isn't just forcing himself to believe in something that isn't true but he is actually trying to believe in something that seems positive.

And as you may have guessed one of those positive beliefs is the one about enjoying the journey.

Why enjoying the journey motto is a total nonsense

There is nothing bad at all with trying to enjoy the journey to success. After all it would be a great thing to have a road full of flowers until you reach such but there are still two serious problems with that belief.

The first is that so many people use it as an excuse to never reach their goals. Those people remain where they are most of their lives and never do the needed effort then claim that they are enjoying the journey. In such a case lack of courage is the main motive behind such a behaviour.

The second serious issue with that belief is that the journey is usually anything but easy and by having wrong expectations a person can easily get shocked . In my previous article the road to success i explained how tough the road to success can be.

Steve Jobs once said 'Sometimes life's going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith'. Jobs was referring to the fact that the road to success is anything but enjoyable.

There is nothing enjoyable about losing your money , losing your home or struggling to pay your bills yet many people try to feed themselves with that wrong belief in order to stay where they are.

Happiness = the end of the journey

Most of the people who write about happiness never experienced true happiness. In fact many of them are also people who lack courage and who are actively trying new methods in order to feel good about themselves.

In my article How to be the happiest person on the planet i explained how reaching your goals is the ultimate level of happiness you can experience.

After all your bad emotions result from your unmet needs. And when you satisfy those unmet needs by reaching your goals ,and not trying to enjoy the journey, then your mind will withdraw all bad emotions until you develop new unmet needs.

Of course some parts of the journey can be enjoyed but if you expected a joyful trip towards your destination then you will get devastated by the first real life shock you come across.
