The advantages of being over sensitive

First of all, do you know that being overly sensitive gives you the following advantages:

  • Increased empathy: have you ever felt sad without any apparent reason right after being with someone who was sad? do you feel depressed when sitting beside a depressed person even if he didn't talk? Most Probably this happened to you and this is because you have increased empathy. You can know how the people around you feel before they even talk. The Empathic ability is a normal ability that each human being have but the overly sensitive person have got much powerful empathic abilities.
  • More happiness: You will experience happiness with a higher intensity. You feel the intensity of emotions more than other people
  • More creativity: Usually sensitive people are very creative and this can help you excel in your career or even help you develop good habits like drawing or writing poetry. Lots of artists are sensitive people
  • More Religious: Being more connected to religion provided that all other factors are constant. The emotionally sensitive person may commit to religious activities more than others and he may even become a religious leader

Dealing with emotional sensitivity

All of the previous points were the advantages you have over others because you are an emotionally sensitive person . Now this is how to make your sensitivity have a minimal impact on your life:

  • First of all know that the words that can hurt an emotionally sensitive person does not hurt unless he views those words in a certain way or give them a certain meaning. So by changing your view of the criticism you receive you can reduce your emotional response to criticism. For example, If someone told you that you didn't perform well today then this doesn't mean that you are a bad or unworthy person. This doesn't mean you are a failure! It's not the words that hurt but it's the meaning that you gave to them that hurts.
  • This brings us to point number two. what can make your view of the criticism you receive to be that bad? Usually its your negative self talk. Negative self talk are the words or the phrases that you use while thinking. Examples of negative self talk phrases are "I know why he said so, because I am a loser" or "I knew that I am not up to the standard that's why she told me so". Lack of self-confidence is one of the major factors that lead to negative self talk. This will in turn let you become hurt by anything that you hear. By building self confidence and changing your negative self talk you won't be removing your sensitivity but instead you will be changing your perception of events and so you won't get that hurt.
  • Giving up perfectionism,Perfectionism is the way of thinking that makes the person think that life is perfect and that he should be perfect in turn. Based on that way of thinking you may expect that all people should praise you, that everyone should say good and encouraging words to others and that everyone should be kind. This kind of thinking will let you become hurt whenever you find that life was not as you expected it to be. Face reality and know that perfectionism is a bad and unrealistic way of thinking .
  • Finally you can use CBT to change your method of thinking and so avoid triggering your sensitivity. CBT is a method of therapy that is very easy to apply. It's based on the concept that your emotions are triggered because of your way of thinking and so by changing your thoughts you can prevent those unwanted emotions from being triggered.
