Where do emotions come from?
Why do we suddenly experience emotions that we were not expecting?
Is there a part in the brain responsible for emotions?
If you want to live a better live and become a happier person then you need to learn more about emotions and their sources so that you become able to control them.
In this article i won't only tell you where do emotions come from but in addition i will tell you how to control them, experience better ones and get rid of the ones that bother you.
Emotions come from the subconscious mind. In order to understand the concept of the subconscious mind just consider it the part of your brain that manages all the things that you are not conscious of.
While reading this article your heart is beating and you are breathing but you are not consciously doing these things because your subconscious mind is taking care of the process.
That's why you might suddenly experience an emotion that you weren't expecting. You only become conscious of an emotion after the subconscious mind induces it. (see How the subconscious mind work)
Your subconscious mind gathers the data, sorts facts, determines the suitable emotion that should be triggered and then it sends it to you. That's why you sometimes think that the emotion come out of no where. Its just that you weren't conscious when it was being prepared.
In my previous article How to understand your emotions i explained how the sole purpose of an emotion is to motivate you to reach a certain goal or to avoid a certain thing that can harm your well being.
What do you usually do when your mobile phone signals low battery? You certainly charge it. Once you understand that emotions are the method of communication between your conscious and your subconscious mind you will find understanding them becoming an easier task.
Emotions don't come out of nowhere as some people believe but they are signals sent with a certain purpose. (see How to be in control of your emotions)
In my book, The ultimate guide to getting over depression i said that the main source for bad and unwanted emotions is the bad habit people learned of ignoring the signals sent to them by their minds.
Back to the mobile phone example, what will happen if you didn't charge the phone? or what will happen if you cleaned it instead of charging it?
Certainly the problem won't be solved and the same exactly happens with your emotions when you don't respond to the signal.
Instead of asking yourself where do emotions come from you should be asking yourself what's the purpose of these emotions. Once you understand the purpose of an emotion you will find out the message that your subconscious mind is trying to tell you and you will be able to act accordingly.
If you are feeling anxious then respond to that emotion by preparing yourself even more
If you are depressed then respond to that emotion by bringing back hope
If you are jealous then respond to that emotion by building self confidence.
The only way to get rid of an unwanted emotion is to understand its source, the purpose the subconscious mind is trying to reach and then respond to it.
