Valuable business lessons from the failure of Optimistnet

Valuable business lessons

This is not an article that just describes my personal experience with a failed project but it's a useful business article for any person who wants to do business.

In 2014 i started Optimistnet a social network that only contains positive and motivational posts. My goal behind that project was crystal clear. I wanted to create a large social network that turns into a 1 billion dollar business.

To do that i had to make sure that i started something that would appeal to the majority of people. I noticed how negative Facebook was and i concluded that people are in need of a positive social network that can help them charge their energies whenever they felt down.

We started Optimistnet and in a short period of time we got 30,000 registered users, 100,000 posts and almost 200,000 page views per month.

And then i realized i was totally wrong.

Most people don't want to fight, they want to run away

Do you know why some people like motivational posts and motivational quotes?
Those people like those things because:

1- They are brave: If a person is brave enough to face his problems then he would need something to help him on his way. Now what if someone doesn't dare to face his problems? Will he like motivational posts? In fact he might hate them because they will remind him of what he was trying to escape from. See why some people hate motivational quotes
  • 2- They are confident: In order for a person to like motivational quotes he needs to have a certain level of confidence that he will be able to solve his own problems. If that level of confidence wasn't present then this person might consider motivational quotes useless

When most people feel down they want to play games, use Facebook or distract themselves in any possible way. A positive quote in such a case is the last thing that person would want to see because it will bring him back to the reality he was trying to run away from. See why people run away from reality.

In short i realized i was creating a social network for brave and confident people and not the majority of people. You might think that this is a great idea to have a social network for such people , and i agree with you, but when you know that those people are less than 5% you will quickly realize that Optimistnet had a very limited potential.

If i was after moderate success i would have continued with optimistnet but because i wanted something really big it was hard to depend on those brave 5%.

What optimistnet was competing with

Optimistnet wasn't competing with the negative newsfeed of Facebook else it would have won but it was competing with all games, procrastination tools, weed, the different kind of drugs and almost everything that people use to distract themselves.

Optimistnet for the majority of people , the ones who lack courage, was a bitter wake up call that reminded them of everything they wanted to run away from.

No wonder the uninstall rate for the App was close to 95%. The 5% who became active users, the brave ones, used to post almost everyday but the others just ran away as fast as they could.

What type of business you should create

There are two types of businesses that do work. The first one is an extremely useful business that people can't live without. For example WhatsApp or Wikipedia. The other type of business is a distraction business such as Clash of clans and other games.

Now optimistnet was neither this nor that. It wasn't something people couldn't live without and it wasn't as well a distraction tool. This is why i realized that no matter what it grew it won't be as big as i wanted it to be.

So did i give up? Of course no.
